Reading at Carina State School

Leading the way in evidence-based reading instruction: A school where every child learns to read.

At Carina State School, we know that reading is the key to lifelong success. That's why we've transformed the way we teach reading—backed by research and a deep commitment to giving every child a strong start on their reading journey. We've embraced reading change, and we're proud to say our reading program is purposeful and proven.

The research is clear: with the right instruction, every child can learn to read. The Science of Reading is a research-backed, scientifically proven framework that guides how we teach reading. By focusing on evidence-based strategies, we ensure our students develop the essential skills they need to become confident, lifelong readers.

From the very beginning of Prep, every student is immersed in a structured synthetic phonics program, where they are explicitly taught how to crack the code of written language. This is paired with rich language experiences, daily practice in reading and writing, and carefully structured support to meet every learner's needs.

At Carina, our reading program is:

  • The explicit, systematic teaching of phonics;
  • Evidence-based instruction that supports every learner;
  • A clear scope and sequence – we don't leave reading to chance;
  • Multi-tiered system of supports to identify and help struggling readers

From Prep to Year Six, our teaching team works with clarity and consistency to deliver high-quality instruction.

We know that some children need more targeted support—and we have systems in place to identify and assist struggling readers early. Through regular assessment and data analysis, we quickly identify students who need assistance and provide timely, focused instructional support. Our dedicated support staff and teachers are working together to ensure no child slips through the cracks.

Whether your child is just starting out, or already on their reading journey, Carina State School is committed to ensuring they have the tools, support and expert teaching needed to thrive.

We are deeply proud of the work we are doing in the reading space, and want to ensure our students leave school not just being able to read, but loving reading and doing it with confidence.

If you want your child to thrive as a reader and writer, in a school where literacy is done right, we invite you to join us.

Because at Carina State School, we believe in every child—and we've built a program to prove it.

Parent Reading at Carina State School

When parents are involved in their child's education, amazing things happen. Research shows that students perform better, feel more confident, and develop stronger learning habits when families are actively engaged. It's about creating a sense of community, shared responsibility, and support for our kids as they grow. At Carina State School, we truly value the partnership between home and classroom, and we're always looking for ways to strengthen that connection.

One area we're focusing on is reading fluency—the ability to read confidently, smoothly, accurately, and with expression. Fluency is a crucial skill that helps students become strong, confident readers, and one of the best ways to build it is through repeated oral reading. That's where you come in! We're inviting parents and carers to come into school and read with our students. It's simple, it's rewarding, and it makes a real difference.

What does it involve? Just a small amount of your time—no teaching experience needed. Volunteers will sit one-on-one with a student, listening as they read aloud from a short, provided text. You'll help them sound out unknown words whilst providing support and encouragement. That same student will read the same text several times throughout the week with different volunteers. This short, sharp practice helps them gain confidence, improve their reading pace, and develop their understanding.

If you can spare a little time, we'd love to have you involved. Whether it's once a week or more regularly, your presence will have a lasting impact. You can help out in your child's year level, or across other year levels if that is your preference. You'll be helping to build fluency, boost confidence, and show our students that their learning is supported and valued by the whole school community. Let's work together to help our kids thrive—get involved and come read with us!

Book in to attend one of our Mandatory Training Sessions you can become part of our parent reading community!
