Japanese Language Program
At Carina State School, Japanese is taught from Prep to Year 6 as part of our commitment to providing a well-rounded, global education.
Our Japanese language program is carefully structured to help students build strong foundational skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking. The focus is on everyday language and meaningful communication, with an emphasis on understanding rather than fluency in the early years.
Students engage in highly supportive learning activities that use common, practical language in familiar contexts. They learn through repetition, visual cues, and consistent teacher modelling, helping them gain confidence in recognising and using Japanese.
Reading activities focus on simple texts written in hiragana, supported by clear visuals to aid comprehension. Listening tasks are rich in vocabulary and structure but made accessible through contextual clues and engaging content. Students begin to produce their own Japanese through short written texts and simple dialogues with their peers.
In addition to language skills, students explore elements of Japanese culture, giving them a deeper appreciation of how language and culture are connected. This cultural understanding supports their learning and encourages curiosity about the world beyond the classroom.
